The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation
The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation is a philanthropic non-profit institution that was established in 1934 by Alfred Pritchard Sloan, Jr., then President and Chief Executive Officer of the General Motors Corporation. The Foundation's interests include support for an Industry Center Program, the objectives of which are to create an academic community that understands industries and to encourage a direct approach to the companies and people of each industry. At present there are 19 Centers at 15 universities, including the Information Storage Industry Center at UCSD. These Centers cover a wide area of the manufacturing and service sectors of the American economy. Since the beginning of this program in 1990, well over 500 faculty members and at least that many graduate students have taken part in the Centers' programs. There have been nearly 300 Ph.D.s produced, most of whom have gone on to other academic positions, and many of whom have continued to work on the issues facing their industries.
